Becoming a Lawyer

Becoming a lawyer requires plenty of dedication, commitment, and higher education. There are a number of renowned law schools in the country that offer law degree programs. If you are interested in becoming a lawyer, you need to prepare yourself for law school and understand how to be a lawyer. To pursue law studies, you need to first complete your higher secondary certificate exam and thereafter you need to take admission in any law school to complete your honours degree. Alternatively after completing bachelor degree from any discipline, you can move on to the next step of becoming a lawyer by getting a law degree from any law college.

Students learn about various legal trends, developments, and procedures. The curriculum of a law degree entails subjects such as criminal law, property, contracts, torts, and constitutional law. Before enrolling in any law college or private university LL.B program, make sure that it has accreditation status from Bangladesh Bar Council.

Steps to Become a Lawyer

The following are the steps to become a lawyer:

  • Finish higher secondary school Exam
  • Enrol in a 4-years LL.B honours degree and complete the degree  or after completing graduation from any discipline take admission  in any Law College
  • Apprenticeship under a lawyer for not less than six months before sitting bar council exam.
  • Take the bar exam – The LL.B degree alone is not your pass to practicing law. You will have to pass your  bar exam to get licensed as a lawyer

Licensing and Practice

Getting a degree isn’t enough to get you started. The requirements also include work experience and a license. A license can only be attained by taking the Bar Exam. Passing this bar exam is necessary to start practicing within your jurisdiction. Practical experience can be gained by working with experienced lawyers and law firms. Experience in the legal profession will help you develop analytical, writing, problem-solving and interpersonal skills.
